Improve Corrosion Protection While Adding Sales Appeal To Toolholders,
Workholding And Turret Press Tooling With The TRU TEMP Finishing Process

Tru Temp

Eden Prairie, Minnesota: High value tooling components such as toolholders, workholding and turret press tooling take on an attractive and protective black oxide finish when finished with TRU TEMP low temperature, non-polluting black oxide system from Birchwood Casey.

The TRU TEMP process forms a non-dimensional, deep black finish with long-term corrosion resistance - the ideal surface for tooling manufactured to tight tolerances. Tool function is not affected, yet the TRU TEMP finish allows tools to be positioned as premium grade products that command higher selling prices than unblackened, or standard grade, products.

In contrast to other hot finishing methods, the low temperature TRU TEMP process can be safely operated in-house, which greatly enhances control over quality and turnaround time. Total processing time is just 25 minutes, and operating cost (including chemical and heating cost) is only $.02 to .03 per pound of finished work. Small parts can often be processed in bulk loads while larger tools are finished on racks. Most existing tank lines can be retrofitted at low cost to accommodate the process, or new process lines are available from Birchwood Casey in all sizes.

A major benefit of the TRU TEMP process is that it operates at only 200°F, thereby eliminating the severe splattering and boilover hazards often seen with conventional hot oxide tanks. The relatively mild solutions used in the process line also prevent the formation of red coatings and white salt leaching that often plague ordinary black oxide finishes.

In addition, the TRU TEMP process contains no EPA regulated chemicals so there is usually no need for waste treatment equipment. In most areas, the rinse waters are sewerable as non-hazardous discharge. This benefit simplifies the installation and minimizes the capital investment needed to set up the process line.
